What It’s Really Like Running a Small Business at Pop-Up Shops, Conventions & Community Events
Running a small business looks a little different when your “store” can be in a convention center one weekend, a community park the next, and right in the middle of a local festival a few weeks later.
That’s life at Mac’s Retro Hub.
We’re a Delaware County small business built around something pretty simple: nostalgia brings people together. Whether it’s a vinyl record you haven’t seen since you were a kid, a favorite band T-shirt, an old-school video game, Pokémon cards, DVDs, CDs, collectibles, or a gift that reminds you of somebody, there’s something special about seeing an item and instantly having a memory attached to it.
And one of my favorite parts of running Mac’s Retro Hub is getting to experience those moments face-to-face at pop-up shops, comic conventions, collectible shows, festivals, and community events throughout Delaware County and the surrounding area.
Being a Small-Business Vendor Is a Lot More Than Setting Up a Table
People walking through an event usually see the finished product: tables full of merchandise, racks of shirts, crates of vinyl, trading cards, collectibles, and a banner hanging behind everything.
What they don’t see is everything that happens before and after.
There’s finding inventory. Pricing it. Cleaning it. Organizing it. Listing products online. Packing bins. Loading the car. Unloading the car. Building the booth. Taking everything down. Loading it again. Bringing it home. And then doing it all over again a few days later.
Sometimes you spend hours getting ready for an event and have an incredible day.
Other times, you spend hours getting ready and wonder where everybody went.
That’s small business.
But every event teaches me something.
I learn which products people are looking for, which displays make someone stop, which pieces spark conversations, and which categories I need to bring more of next time.
The Best Part Is the People
One thing I’ve always known is that selling retro and nostalgic merchandise isn’t really just about the merchandise.
It’s about the stories.
Someone picks up a record and tells me their dad used to play it constantly.
Someone spots an old video game and immediately starts telling their friend about playing it after school.
A kid starts digging through Pokémon cards.
Someone finds a shirt from a movie, band, sports team, cartoon, or character they love.
People start talking.
That’s exactly what I wanted Mac’s Retro Hub to be.
Not just another place selling things — but a place where nostalgia, collecting, pop culture, music, gaming, and community come together.
You Never Know What You’ll Find at the Booth
One reason I love doing pop-up events is that the inventory is constantly changing.
Depending on the event, you might find:
- Retro and pop-culture T-shirts and apparel
- Vinyl records, including new and used albums
- CDs and DVDs
- Retro video games
- Pokémon cards and other trading cards
- Sports cards and collectibles
- Anime and pop-culture merchandise
- Funko Pops and other collectibles
- 3D-printed retro and gaming items
- Unique nostalgic gifts
- And plenty of things you didn’t know you were looking for until you saw them
That last category might actually be my favorite.
Some of the best purchases are the ones that make somebody stop and say:
“I haven’t seen one of these in years.”
Why Local Pop-Up Shops Matter
Shopping with a small business at a local festival, convention, vendor show, or community day means more than buying an item.
You’re helping that business grow.
You’re helping somebody buy the next round of inventory, pay for the next event, improve their display, build their website, and eventually move closer to whatever the next big goal might be.
For Mac’s Retro Hub, every event is another step toward building something permanent here in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
And I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has stopped by, bought something, followed us online, told a friend about the business, or simply spent a few minutes talking nostalgia with me.

Looking for Something Specific?
One of the best parts of being a small independent retailer is that I can actually listen to what customers are looking for.
If you’re searching for a particular retro video game, vinyl record, CD, DVD, T-shirt, Pokémon item, collectible, nostalgic gift, sports item, anime item, or pop-culture collectible, ask me.
Even if it isn’t sitting on the table when you visit, I may be able to find it.
That personal connection is something I want to keep at the center of Mac’s Retro Hub as the business grows.
